You tell your manager you’ve got a doctor’s appointment – and they hit you with:
“Can’t you do that in your own time?”
So here’s the real question:
Can they actually say no?
The short version?
Yes – if it’s a routine appointment and not disability-related, they can say no.
There’s no automatic legal right to time off for medical appointments.
Unless your contract says otherwise, it’s up to them.
What if it’s linked to a disability?
Then it’s different.
If the appointment relates to a disability, it could fall under the Equality Act 2010.
Refusing to let you attend might count as discrimination — especially if it’s something you need to manage your condition.
This doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed the time off – but it does mean they can’t just brush it off without thinking.
Check your contract or company policy
Some employers do offer time off for medical appointments – paid or unpaid.
If your contract or staff handbook includes it, that’s legally binding.
If it doesn’t?
You’re relying on goodwill.
Which is never a reliable workplace policy.
The real issue isn’t policy – it’s guilt
Too many workers get shamed for even asking.
You book an appointment, and suddenly you’re getting looks – or comments like “we’re really short-staffed that day.”
It’s not about the rule. It’s about power.
Here’s what you can do
- ✅ Check your contract or staff handbook
- ✅ If it’s disability-related, mention it’s a reasonable adjustment (you don’t need to go into detail)
- ✅ Ask them to confirm refusals in writing
- ✅ Keep records if things escalate
One last thing
Just because your boss can say no doesn’t mean they should.
If they’re guilt-tripping you for looking after your health, they’re not protecting the business – they’re abusing power.
This is part of my series: “Can They Actually Do That?”
Every week I break down stuff like this on TikTok and YouTube – in plain English, not corporate jargon.
